Bogans purchase Bates and Tuttle Funeral Home
Sep 1, 2017One of Orleans County’s oldest businesses, the funeral home’s most recent owners were conglomerates Keystone and, most recently, SCI.Kevin has been a funeral director there for 25 years and he and his wife, local attorney and assistant district attorney Kathy Bogan, are thrilled to be part of a local, family-owned business. The history of the business dates back to 1869, when brothers J.S. and C.A. McCormick were dealers in furniture, crockery and undertaking on Main Street (or what was then Shelby Street). The business later became the Holdredge, Hartt and Hill Company. In 1979, when Ethel Hartt Helmkamp, daughter of H. LeBaron Hartt, was interviewed by the Orleans County Historical Association, she said in those days funerals took place in the homes. There was always a crepe hung on the door when a death occurred.Helmkamp also stated her father continued the funeral and embalming business for decades, later being joined by David A. Barnes. As times and traditions changed, H. LeBaron Hartt Co. in 1938 purchased the home of Charles Swett of the Swett Electric Light and Power Company. The “grand” Swett home at 226 Pearl St. is the funeral home today.Walter Tuttle eventually joined the business and it became Barnes & Tuttle. In 1972, the former Smythe Funeral Home on Main Street in Lyndonville was purchased and became a Barnes & Tuttle Funeral Home. Walter’s son Jim also joined the business and in recent years the Bates Funeral Home from Middleport had an interest. The Bogan’s purchase from SCI returns the funeral home to a locally and family-owned business.“We are thrilled to own this historic business in our community,” Kevin Bogan said.Kathy is a local attorney and has been Orleans County assistant district attorney for 25 years. They are both committed to their community, as is evident by their involvement in numerous organizations. This includes Knights of Columbus, Boy Scout Troop 35, Medina Business Association, Orleans County Bar Association, Medina Mustang Band Boosters and many others.
